7 tips for cleaner conversions

Most bad conversion results are bad inputs, not bad tools. Seven habits — trim first, resize before compressing, lossless vs lossy — that make every output better.

1–2: Shrink the job before you run it

Tip 1: trim first. A GIF made from a 2-minute video is really a GIF of its first seconds plus a long wait — cut the clip to the moment, then convert. Tip 2: resize before you compress. A 4000-pixel photo displayed at 800 pixels is 25× the data it needs to be; scaling it down first makes the compressor’s job trivial and the result cleaner.

3–4: Pick the format like you mean it

Tip 3: know lossy from lossless. MP3 and JPG throw detail away on purpose — convert a WAV to MP3 once, not MP3 to MP3 to MP3; every generation costs quality. Tip 4: match the format to the destination. MP4 for video that must play anywhere, PNG when transparency matters, WEBP/AVIF when the web is the destination and size matters most, PDF when the document must look identical forever.

5–7: Source quality is destiny

Tip 5: grab the best source. Downloading at the highest quality and converting down beats downloading small and converting up — nothing invents detail. Tip 6: respect the 200 MB limit gracefully: compress a huge video or split a huge PDF first, then run the real job. Tip 7: check the result before you delete the original — formats are faithful, but options (a wrong trim point, a sideways rotate) are human. Thirty seconds of checking saves a re-upload.
